Injury update for Joe Mixon: Report provides running back status prior to playoff game against the Chiefs

The Houston Texans received a favorable report from James Palmer of The Bleacher Report on Friday night. According to Palmer, Texans running back Joe Mixon is expected to play in the AFC Divisional round against the top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs. Houston will find out on Saturday how he feels and moves in pregame to see whether he can handle his typical workload against the Chiefs.

Mixon, 28, did not practice Thursday after being limited during Wednesday’s practice.

Mixon struggled with an ankle injury earlier in the season. He suffered the injury in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears and missed Weeks 3 through 5. Mixon returned in Week 6 against the New England Patriots, and he has appeared in every game since.

Mixon got his second Pro Bowl selection this season after rushing for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns at 4.1 yards per carry. He rushed for 106 yards on 25 carries in the AFC Wild Card Round against the Los Angeles Chargers last Saturday, a 32-12 victory. He scored a 17-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Joe Mixon has had an excellent NFL career.
Mixon has been a standout running back during his career, totaling 1,816 carries, 7,428 rushing yards, and 60 touchdowns. He has averaging 4.1 yards per carry. As a receiver, he has 319 receptions for 2,448 yards and 14 touchdowns. He’s averaged 7.7 yards per reception.

When healthy, he was one of the Texans’ most reliable and effective offensive weapons this season. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that he was instrumental in leading them to the 2025 NFL playoffs.

Mixon became one of the top all-purpose backs in college football during his time at Oklahoma. He ran for 753 yards and seven touchdowns in 2015.
