On Sunday afternoon, the Toronto Maple Leafs played the Pittsburgh Penguins to wrap up their four-game road trip. They have won seven of their last eight games, all but one of which were away games at Scotiabank Arena, and they have been playing great hockey lately.
After a back-and-forth match, Toronto won the game 6–5 in overtime. William Nylander’s perfect wrist shot into the top left corner just one minute into the extra session gave him the victory.
Matthews recorded his second assist of the game on the play, raising his career point total to 700. With 607 games played, the nine-year veteran is the quickest Maple Leaf to ever accomplish that feat. The Maple Leafs responded to the game with a post after it ended.
Milestones are nothing new to Matthews. The former first overall choice has a number of NHL records, including the most goals scored in a debut (four), the most goals scored by a rookie who was born in the United States (40), and the longest run of games with a shot on goal to begin a career (103).
For the Maple Leafs, he is the only player in team history to record 30 or more goals in each of his first four NHL seasons, holds the single-season goal record (69), and was the quickest to reach 500 points (445 games). The 27-year-old has scored 22 goals and provided 29 assists in 45 games this season, good for 51 points overall. On Monday night, Matthews and the Maple Leafs will return to the ice when they play the San Jose Sharks at home. At 7:30 p.m. ET, the puck drop will take place.
