On Wednesday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays traded right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus to the Pittsburgh Pirates for financial considerations.
On Friday, Toronto designated 27-year-old De Geus for assignment.
Having pitched in 60 Major League Baseball games, de Geus has a 3-4 record, a 7.48 ERA over 61 1/3 innings, 48 walks, and 29 strikeouts.
De Geus has only ever made relief appearances in the major leagues.
He appeared in 13 games overall with a 7.15 ERA last season while bouncing around three Major League Baseball teams: the Miami Marlins, Seattle Mariners, and Blue Jays.
His four main pitches are a sinker, which he throws over 45% of the time, knuckle-curve (28%), cutter (21%), and splitter (5%), according to Statcast.
In 2024, De Geus played in 39 Triple-A games, 32 of which were with the Tacoma Rainiers.
A year ago, he had a 0–4 record and a 5.31 ERA in 39 innings pitched in the minor leagues.
During his most comprehensive MLB season in 2021, De Geus pitched 50 innings for the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks, going 3-2 with a 7.56 ERA.
