Following a week off, the Detroit Lions will play the Washington Commanders on Saturday, January 18, in the NFL playoffs’ Divisional Round. Even though the Lions have many advantages this season, particularly as the NFC’s top seed and home games throughout the playoffs, several NFL pundits and experts are already considering the team’s future after this campaign.
The Lions’ legacy is based on their ability to retain outstanding players, a competent coaching staff, and capable management, led by general manager Brad Holmes. However, some of these elements might not be present in the upcoming season. It’s interesting to see, but it doesn’t necessarily indicate the Lions will start losing.
It would “surprise” an NFL analyst if the Detroit Lions retained either coordinator.
It’s becoming clear that the Detroit Lions may lose their head coordinators as head coach interviews increase. NFL teams have previously interviewed both defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who are at the top of their wish lists.
Adam Schefter, an ESPN NFL insider and analyst, often makes a visit on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Mondays, but on Tuesday, January 14, he made a special appearance to discuss the intensifying head coach searches.
Naturally, Schefter brought up Glenn’s status as a candidate who is “square in play there” when discussing the New York Jets’ head coaching search. Then he revealed certain facts that can bring tears to the eyes of Lions supporters.
“Aaron Glenn will find employment throughout this cycle. This cycle, Ben Johnson will find employment,” Schefter said. “And I believe that the Lions will most likely lose both of their coordinators in this cycle, as it is a very real possibility.”
“I’d be really surprised if both of them didn’t end up with head coaching jobs,” he continued.
In particular, Schefter stated that if Glenn didn’t get a head coaching position this cycle, it would be a “major upset” to him. Given his propensity for insider knowledge, Schefter might know something about a team, like the Jets, putting a lot of money into Glenn.
Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell Discusses the Job Search Status of Coordinators
People are curious in Glenn and Johnson’s current and future statuses, while the Detroit Lions are preoccupied with the immediate goal of winning the Super Bowl. In an interview with the media on Monday, January 13, Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked if he had discussed the head coach position with either of his coordinators or if he had heard back from them regarding the interviews they had previously completed.
Why would I want to know that, then? Do you believe I want them to go? Campbell grinned as he spoke. You make a valid point. Ignorance is bliss, so the saying goes. Johnson and Glenn have both contributed to the Lions’ 15-2 record, which is no small feat.
“I have an idea of how they’re doing,” Campbell continued. I haven’t yet rushed in to inquire about their departure. That is not what I did. I will discuss what happened with them later today.
