Is Hiring Two First-Time Coordinators
Too Risky for Lions?
The Detroit Lions have filled one coordinator job but still have one open. By moving Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator, the Lions took the first step toward filling the vacancies created by Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson. Glenn departed his position as Lions defensive coordinator to become head coach of the New York Jets, while Johnson joined the Chicago Bears as head coach after three years as Lions offensive coordinator.
While the Lions complete their search, a popular candidate has emerged in the form of Tanner Engstrand, the Lions’ current passing game coordinator. Detroit has also allegedly questioned John Morton, a seasoned coach. “The more I think about it, the more I believe an external hire will be made. Ben Johnson is an offensive mastermind, without a doubt, but as we’ve looked into this further, I believe Dan Campbell may have had more influence on this offense than people initially thought,” said co-host Christian Booher. “Dan Campbell is an offensive thinker, and we heard him say at his last press conference that he wanted to be very active in the hiring process and find someone who shared his philosophical beliefs.
