It is time to put an end to the speculation and analysis over which direction the Montreal Canadiens should take at this year’s trade deadline. This weekend provided a wonderful opportunity for the squad to demonstrate why their fans should continue to believe in them. However, they lost both games to the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New Jersey Devils, and they spent too much time gazing in the back of their net for pucks, as Sam Montembeault does in the image above.
There was an opinion that the Canadiens should have sold at this year’s trade deadline. They made considerable progress midway through the season and appeared to be postseason candidates, but this group would never compete for a Stanley Cup. If you make it to the postseason and everything goes as planned, you may be able to pull off an upset or two and advance through the rounds. However, everything happened as planned in 2021, and the Canadiens still came three wins short with Carey Price.
It is difficult to win the Stanley Cup in this league. It’s the most difficult postseason to compete in, and the Canadiens lack the maturity and horses to climb the mountain. They will be ready to accomplish it eventually, but not in 2025. The Canadiens are better off getting rid of their expiring assets, accumulating some of those younger assets in trade returns, and fantasizing about better days ahead.
Punting on their achievements in November and December and selling at the trade deadline is a difficult surrender to make. The Canadiens’ front office has a reputation for stubbornness, but under Kent Hughes, things have changed. According to RG.org, a source said the Canadiens are ready to trade but may try to acquire some young roster players rather than draft capital or prospects.
“Sources indicate that Montreal is targeting a young, NHL-ready forward and age-appropriate top-4 right-shot defensemen—someone who can contribute immediately but also fits into their long-term vision,” Marco D’Amico, of RG.org, said. “The Canadiens are allegedly interested in guys like Dylan Cozens and Trevor Zegras, who match the type of skillful, youthful centers who could supplement their current roster.
Cozens and Zegras ideas are not new to this site; we’ve discussed the possibilities of signing those players numerous times. The Canadiens have lots of alternatives, and Hughes may eventually be forced to make a decision. The 12-day break provides the front staff plenty of time to accept that this season is a lost cause and become comfortable with returning to the draft lottery and earning a top choice.
