On Sunday, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun revealed that negotiations between Jake Evans and the Canadiens are not going well. After the game against the Lightning, Evans spoke about his time with the Canadiens in the past tense, which makes the situation somewhat strange.
There are only a few weeks until the NHL trade deadline, and if Kent Hughes and his center do not reach an agreement by March 7, he might be sent somewhere in the league.
However, during his appearance on JiC on Monday night, TVA Sports’ Renaud Lavoie sought to soothe Canadiens fans.
According to a TVA Sports insider, Evans’ contract with Montreal has a “very real possibility” of being extended.

As Renaud Lavoie explained, it is entirely normal to see Jake Evans’ camp and the Canadiens negotiating aggressively. It’s part of the game.
It is critical to understand that negotiating for a player who exceeds the terms of his contract can be difficult. Jake Evans earns only $1.7 million per season, averaging one point every two games.
It is certain that he will be entitled to a raise, but it remains to be seen whether Kent Hughes is willing to pay the cost.
His point production can boost his compensation, but we’re also talking about a player who is incredibly responsible on both ends of the ice, excels on the penalty kill, and has some postseason experience.

Joel Armia’s value could be higher than one thinks.
Kent Hughes has previously stated that he would demand at least a second-round selection in a trade, but if negotiations go smoothly, Evans’ price might rise.
Montreal has lost eight of their last nine games. This is most likely a clear indication that the Canadiens should continue to sell at the trade deadline.
However, one must ponder if Evans may be part of the core when the CH gets competitive. At 28 years old, he still has a lot of hockey to play, unlike a player like David Savard.
If Kent Hughes thinks Evans may help the Canadiens in the future, it wouldn’t be unexpected to see him try everything necessary to extend the center’s contract.
