Wrexham and Birmingham City Reignite Rivalry in Summer Transfer Window

The competitive spirit between Wrexham and Birmingham City, intensified by their 2024/25 League One promotion battle, has spilled over into the current summer transfer window. With high-profile backing from figures like Rob McElhenney, Ryan Reynolds, and Tom Brady, these two North America-backed clubs are once again locking horns, this time in the pursuit of key players.1

After Birmingham City clinched the League One title in record-breaking fashion and Wrexham secured automatic promotion to the Championship, both clubs are eager to strengthen their squads for the upcoming 2025/26 season. This ambition has seen them target several of the same players.

One notable target for both Wrexham and Birmingham was Harry Darling from Swansea City, though the defender ultimately chose to join Norwich City on a free transfer. More recently, the clubs vied for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Tommy Doyle. While Wrexham reportedly missed out, Birmingham City has now confirmed Doyle’s signing, adding him to their ranks for the Championship campaign.
