Dave Gahan’s Expansive New Projects: From Solo Album to Humanist Collaborations

Dave Gahan, the iconic frontman of Depeche Mode, is embarking on a series of ambitious projects that showcase his evolving artistry beyond the band’s legacy. These ventures include a deeply personal solo album, collaborations with the collective Humanist, and a tribute to the late Mark Lanegan, reflecting Gahan’s commitment to exploring new musical landscapes.

In early 2025, Gahan announced his forthcoming solo album, Shadows and Light, described as a reflection on life’s complexities. The album features collaborations with renowned artists such as producer Flood and electronic musician Moby, indicating a blend of introspective lyrics and innovative sounds. The lead single, “Into the Abyss,” has already garnered attention for its haunting melody and emotional depth.

Parallel to his solo work, Gahan continues his collaboration with Humanist, a project led by guitarist and producer Rob Marshall. Their latest single, “Brother,” serves as a tribute to the late Mark Lanegan, capturing themes of loss and remembrance. Gahan’s involvement in this track underscores his connection to Lanegan and his willingness to engage in emotionally resonant projects.

Gahan’s collaboration with Humanist began with the 2020 single “Shock Collar,” where he contributed vocals to Marshall’s industrial rock composition. This partnership has evolved, with Gahan participating in Humanist’s second album, On the Edge of a Lost and Lonely World, set for release in July 2024. The album features a diverse array of artists, highlighting Gahan’s versatility and openness to cross-genre collaborations.

In addition to studio projects, Gahan is slated to perform at a tribute concert for Mark Lanegan in London on December 5, 2025. This event signifies Gahan’s ongoing engagement with live performances and his dedication to honoring influential figures in the music industry.

Through these endeavors, Dave Gahan demonstrates a continuous evolution as an artist, embracing new challenges and collaborations that expand his musical repertoire. His work outside of Depeche Mode not only honors past influences but also paves the way for innovative expressions in contemporary music
