Following the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing’s Team Principal, Christian Horner, has reignited discussions about modifying the iconic Circuit de Monaco to enhance overtaking opportunities. The race, traditionally known for its glamour and prestige, has faced criticism for its processional nature, with the latest event featuring minimal on-track action.
Horner emphasized that while Monaco holds a special place in Formula 1 due to its history and unique setting, the current track layout poses significant challenges for modern F1 cars, which have grown in size over the years. He noted that overtaking has become “virtually impossible” under normal racing conditions, suggesting that without changes, the race’s long-term viability could be at risk.
One of Horner’s proposals includes introducing at least one area on the circuit where overtaking is feasible. He pointed out that with ongoing land reclamation projects in Monaco, there might be opportunities to create a bigger braking zone or even extend the circuit to incorporate a new section that allows for overtaking maneuvers.
The call for changes isn’t isolated to Horner. Other team principals, including Mercedes’ Toto Wolff and McLaren’s Andrea Stella, have echoed similar sentiments. Wolff suggested implementing maximum lap time regulations to prevent overly cautious driving that hinders competition, while Stella acknowledged the need to explore feasible layout adjustments despite Monaco’s geographical constraints.
Despite these suggestions, the Automobile Club de Monaco has maintained that altering the historic circuit is nearly impossible due to its location and infrastructure. The track has seen only minor changes since its inception in 1929, and any significant modifications would require substantial investment and urban planning.
As Formula 1 continues to evolve, balancing tradition with the need for competitive racing remains a challenge. While Monaco’s allure is undeniable, the pressure to adapt and enhance the racing experience is mounting, prompting stakeholders to consider innovative solutions for one of the sport’s most iconic venues.
