One of the greatest seasons in the Detroit Lions’ history just ended. Detroit got the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, won 15 games, and won the NFC North for the second straight season. Regretfully, the Commanders defeated the Lions in the Divisional Round. To ensure that doesn’t happen again, Detroit needs to concentrate on the offseason.
At the NFL Combine on Wednesday, Lions general manager Brad Holes talked with Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Holmes talked candidly about Detroit’s impending contract extensions for a number of its top players throughout the conversation.
“Having this problem is good, but when you look back, you realize that you have a bill to pay right now,” Holmes stated through Garafolo. The reason for this is that you get two one’s, two two’s, then two one’s again, and it’s like, ‘Oh, we got Penei Sewell.’We all like seven [first-round level guys], so it’s like, “Wait, hold on.”
The next players in line for significant contract extensions are safety Kerby Joseph and Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson.
Holmes said, “I’d love to keep these guys around, but it starts to add up when you have Amon-Ra St. Brown in the fourth round and Kerby Joseph in the third.” It just modifies a few of the choices you would like to make in the context of free agency. We have already begun the necessary preparations and effort to make those improvements.
