Rare Vintage Super 8 Footage Uncovers Edinburgh’s Beauty Like You’ve Never Seen Before!

The vintage footage shows rare shots of Edinburgh in the 1970s

Nostalgic video footage shows Edinburgh’s Blackford Hill and entrance to the Hermitage of Braid from decades past.

The footage was taken in 1975 and captures some of Edinburgh’s most beautiful green spaces as they looked 50 years ago.

The nostalgic clip features shots of the Hills on a pleasant, sunny day – appearing to the naked eye much as they do today.

Near the end, it shows a woman exiting the Hermitage of Braid onto Braid Road where a number of classic cars can be spotted, including a classic orange Volkswagen bus.

The videographer, Mike Barnes, took the video as a teenager when he was shooting short films around Edinburgh in the mid-1970s.

He commented that it “would never have occurred” to him that “half a century would pass” and people would still be watching his films.

Mike spent most of his life in Morningside and Bruntsfield and has a collection of Super 8 footage of the surrounding areas.

He told Edinburgh Live: “What I never realised back in the day about everyday footage, is that what people find most interesting

“It isn’t the view, no matter how scenic, but the things that they either haven’t seen for 50 years or never even saw – like those old cars in the final shot.

“Also, how as a teenager, it would never have occurred to me that half a century would pass before people would be watching my films again.”
