Franco Colapinto Gets Shock F1 Call-Up as Alpine Benches Jack Doohan for Five Races

In a surprising development that’s stirring the Formula 1 paddock, Alpine has officially confirmed that Franco Colapinto will step in to replace Jack Doohan for at least the next five Grand Prix races. The decision was announced early Tuesday morning following days of speculation, making Colapinto the second Argentine driver to compete in modern F1 history. This move signals a pivotal shift in Alpine’s strategy as the team looks to shake up its current performance trajectory.

Colapinto, a standout in the Formula 2 series and part of the Williams Driver Academy, has long been touted as a rising star. His aggressive yet calculated driving style and sharp race instincts have impressed team principals across the paddock. Despite his ties with Williams, Alpine has seized the opportunity to bring in fresh talent after a string of underwhelming results and internal discussions about Doohan’s recent form. The temporary replacement, however, leaves the door open for either a permanent change or Doohan’s eventual return.

Alpine team principal Bruno Famin addressed the media shortly after the announcement, stating: “We’ve made this decision to evaluate all our options and inject new energy into the team. Franco has shown incredible potential in the junior categories, and we believe this is the right time to give him a chance on the big stage.” While the team insists the decision is performance-based, insiders suggest there may have also been strategic motivations behind the scenes, including sponsor influence and long-term driver development plans.

Doohan, meanwhile, has yet to issue a detailed response but is expected to remain involved with Alpine’s development and simulator programs. The son of legendary motorcycle champion Mick Doohan has had a rocky start in F1, struggling to match the consistency and pace required at the top tier. His absence over the next several races will be closely watched, particularly in terms of how Colapinto performs under pressure and whether he can secure strong results amid the intense competition.

The motorsport world will now shift its gaze to Colapinto’s first race weekend in Alpine colors. Expectations are high, and comparisons to past mid-season rookie debuts are already circulating. Should he deliver strong performances, Alpine may face a difficult decision regarding its 2025 lineup. For now, Colapinto steps into the spotlight with Argentina’s hopes riding high and an F1 career-defining opportunity at his fingertips.
