H-Town Hold’em: Why Walking Away from Houston Could Be Million-Dollar Mistake

The Houston Texans have had success under DeMeco Ryans, making it to the divisional round for the last two seasons.

Granted they haven’t been able to move past that round and will use the offseason to make some changes to the roster. The Texans have multiple players hitting the free agent market but Stefon Diggs was urged to return to Houston for the 2025 by ESPN’s Matt Bowen.

In an article posted on ESPN.com, Bowen ranked the top 50 free agents this spring and which spots make the most sense. In Diggs’ case, that location was Houston.

He wrote, “The Texans need playmakers in the route tree to go with Nico Collins– especially because Tank Dell might miss a good chunk of time– so re-signing Diggs makes sense. After all, they traded a second-round pick to get him last offseason.”

Bowen added, “Once healthy and cleared to play next season, Diggs can create separation and produce after the catch for quarterback C.J. Stroud and new offensive coordinator Nick Caley.”

His reasoning makes a ton of sense and both sides would be wise to reunite for the 2025 season. With Dell expected to have a long road before stepping back on the field and Nico Collins being the only reliable weapon in the passing attack, the Texans will need another receiver.

Before going down with the torn ACL, Diggs was an effective playmaker for Houston. He had 47 receptions for 496 yards and three touchdowns. He is a crafty route runner who can do damage in the open field as a pass-catcher.

With the salary cap increasing between $277.5-$281.5 million for the 2025 season, giving teams $22.1M-$26.1M more in cap space, the Texans should have no reason not to bring Diggs back for another season at the minimum.
