Alabama football bringing Ryan Grubb on as offensive coordinator throws a wrench in the Crimson Tide’s QB competition.
Ty Simpson is already under the gun with Austin Mack and Keelon Russell’s growing chances to be QB1. Kalen DeBoer trusts Grubb from their shared history, giving the OC more free reins to design Tide’s 2025 O-line his way.
As Colin Gay of Tuscaloosa News underlines in the sub-heading, the QBs “run the show” under Grubb.
“Traditionally, Grubb quarterbacks have not been dual-threat weapons like Alabama had in 2024 with Jalen Milroe,” Gay writes.
“Simply put, Grubb develops and coaches gunslinging quarterbacks who define the offense they play for. And at Alabama, Grubb could have three that fit that mold.”
Those three are Simpson, Russell, and Mack; all fit Grubb’s “mold” perfectly, with each having about similar passing numbers in high school.
Simpson stands strong with 2827 passing yards and 52 touchdowns in 2022, Mack with 3,500 passing yards and 40 touchdowns, and Russell with 3,000 passing yards and nearly 50 touchdowns.
But it’s not just about filling in Jalen Milroe’s shoes anymore. It’s about continuing Grubb’s legacy of forging iconic QBs.
“All three fit the highly accurate, pass-first mold Grubb generally has in a quarterback. And the battle for which quarterback is next to follow Haener, Penix and Smith under Grubb is about to begin,” Gay wrote.
The expectations are high from the proven successful HC/OC tandem from their time in Fresno State and Washington.
