In the midst of confusing spinoff and season 7 reports, Yellowstone’s director candidly addresses the show’s future after season 5. “Each Of Those Characters Could Sustain Their Own Narratives”

Yellowstone director Christina Voros speaks honestly about the show’s future, including reports of spinoffs and a possible sixth season. It has been confirmed that another Yellowstone spinoff, The Madison, is in the works. It will be led by Michelle Pfeiffer, a three-time Oscar nominee. It’s unclear what happens to the hit Western drama that began the Yellowstone franchise after the future episodes, which will premiere in a matter of days.

Voros was asked in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of Yellowstone season 5 part 2, which premieres Sunday, November 10 at 8 p.m. ET on the Paramount Network, if she felt like she was directing the show’s final episodes. The veteran filmmaker, who helmed episodes of the spinoff 1883 and will direct The Madison, says she doesn’t know if Yellowstone will end.

I believe the level of secrecy involved indicated that we were safeguarding a conclusion. So, what does the future hold? I do not know. I honestly do not know.

Voros elaborates on the uncertainty around Yellowstone season 6. When asked if the story could be continued or if it was ended satisfactorily, the filmmaker replied that it was both. Overall, Voros compliments the Western drama and believes that Beth or Rip might individually carry the plot forward:

Both? When you create memorable characters like this, everyone has their own tale that might be continued. That is true of most shows, particularly outstanding shows. And that’s why there have been so many spinoffs in the last decade, because there’s a character that sticks out and you think, “Well, that character isn’t there anymore, but boy, it would be interesting to see what this character does next.” I believe that if you create characters that are complex, multifaceted, and compelling with a life force, each of those characters can sustain their own narratives.

Yellowstone Season 6 and Spinoff News: Explained

The Madison project is well underway. According to official reports, the spinoff is “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection” that focusses on a New York family in central Montana’s Madison River region. The spinoff’s ensemble features Pfeiffer, Lost actor Matthew Fox, Suits star Patrick J. Adams, and more. Taylor Sheridan, who created the Yellowstone franchise, is one of the executive producers.

Meanwhile, there has been no formal announcement on Yellowstone season 6. However, in recent months, there have been indications that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are in talks to resume their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. When given the opportunity to reply directly to such allegations, Reilly declined to confirm or deny if she would return for more Yellowstone beyond the final season 5 episodes.

It’s worth noting that much of the uncertainty derives from Kevin Costner’s dramatic departure as pivotal John Dutton, as well as the public battle between Sheridan and Paramount. Given John’s importance to the plot, it’s unclear how he will be written out of the series. The lack of news on season 6 could also be due to a desire to retain the spotlight on Yellowstone season 5 Part 2, which has yet to premiere.

Our thoughts on the latest Yellowstone comments

The fifth chapter of Yellowstone will start up with Beth and Jamie’s potentially deadly animosity, as well as answer the question of how John Dutton will be written out. The prevalent mood among the actors and crew seemed to be to finish what is left of the plot before looking ahead. Depending on how the program finishes, there may be more spinoffs or a sequel on the road.
