Three reasons the Oilers should consider adding Jake Guentzel
According to The Fourth Period, Jake Guentzel, who is perhaps the hottest trade asset of the 2024 trade deadline season, could be linked to the Edmonton Oilers. With Guentzel still on injured reserve, a lot of teams will be vying for a blockbuster deal involving one of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ best players by the March 8th deadline.
With the current cap restrictions, it won’t be easy for the Oilers to fit Guentzel into their lineup. However, by including a player like Cody Ceci in a deal for Guentzel or in a different trade, Edmonton may be able to free up enough cap space to allow Guentzel to join the team immediately and work toward an extension after the season.
He still has a lot of excellent hockey seasons ahead of him at age 29. Guentzel is worth chasing just for that reason: if he were to play alongside Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid for an extended period of time, Edmonton would have three elite players to base their future plans around.
At the 2024 trade deadline, the Oilers will have competition to acquire Jake Guentzel.
