The Washington Capitals, led by Alex Ovechkin, inflicted a significant loss on Joe Sacco’s Bruins, resulting in their worst showing in nearly three decades.

Following their 4-3 loss to Alex Ovechkin‘s Washington Capitals at TD Garden, the Boston Bruins hit a new low in their downward spiral during the 2024-25 NHL season. Joe Sacco‘s nightmare year with the ‘Spoked B’ continues, as the team extends its losing skid to nine games—matching a feat not seen in Boston since 1997.

The Bruins’ NHL season is all but over, as their lottery draft odds now outweigh their playoff chances in Boston’s hierarchy of priorities. The ‘Spoked B’ has been held winless since March 11, when they defeated the Florida Panthers by a score of 3-2.

Since then, it’s been a complete trainwreck for the NHL franchise in Beantown. The Bruins have suffered nine consecutive losses, posting a disastrous 1-9-1 record over their last 11 games.

Their latest defeat, a 4-3 loss to Ovechkin and the Capitals, cemented an unwanted milestone—one Boston hadn’t endured since before the turn of the century.

Following the Bruins’ loss to the Caps and the Sabres’ 5-2 victory over the Senators, Sacco’s Boston squad tumbled to last place in the East in April for the first time since the 1996-97 season. That year, the Bruins would go on to own the first overall selection in the Draft.

One more goal off the list
During Washington’s vital win in Boston, as the Caps snapped their three-game winless slump and extended their lead over the rest of the East, Ovechkin added one more goal to his list. With his 891st career NHL tally, ‘Ovi’ is now just four goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record.

“A goal is a goal,”Ovechkin said about his score No. 891, per NHL.com. “It was a great play by [Dylan] Strome and [John Carlson].”

Up next, the Capitals will take on the Carolina Hurricanes on April 2, as Ovechkin vies to edge closer to Gretzky’s historic milestone. With eight games remaining in the season, ‘Ovi’ will need to score at a 0.5 goals per game pace to surpass ‘The Great One’ in the all-time scoring list.
