Texas and Texas A&M play for a spot in SEC title game. It’s not first time a title has been at stake

Saturday’s Texas-Texas A&M game will be the 16th time since 1934, when the Southwest Conference began round-robin play, that the outcome will have a direct bearing on a conference championship. The winner on Saturday will reach the SEC title game.

Big 12

2001: No. 5 Texas 21, Texas A&M 7

Having lost to Oklahoma earlier in the season, the Longhorns needed a win to clinch the Big 12 South title.

Southwest Conference

1995: No. 9 Texas 16, No. 16 Texas A&M 6

The Aggies could have tied Texas for the conference title with a win, but the Longhorns prevailed in the final SWC season.

1994: No. 11 Texas A&M 34, Texas 10

A&M was on NCAA probation and ineligible for the title, but Texas could have broken an eventual five-way tie with a victory over the Aggies.

1993: No. 8 Texas A&M 18, Texas 9

A Texas win would have given the Longhorns a share of the conference title with A&M.

1987: No. 15 Texas A&M 20, Texas 13

A&M’s upset knocked the Longhorns out of a three-way title tie with Houston and Arkansas and cost the Longhorns a Sugar Bowl berth.

1977: No. 1 Texas 57, Texas A&M 28

Earl Campbell’s four touchdowns helped Texas win an outright title and cost the Aggies a three-way championship tie with Texas and Arkansas.

1975: No. 2 Texas A&M 20, No. 5 Texas 10

Texas would have been outright champions with a victory and the Aggies lost their chance at an outright title a week later by losing to Arkansas, creating a three-way tie with the Longhorns and Razorbacks.

1974: No. 17 Texas 32, No. 8 Texas A&M 3

The Longhorns’ win gave Baylor an outright championship.

1971: No 12 Texas 34, Texas A&M 14

An A&M win would have given the conference title to Arkansas over the Longhorns.

1967: Texas A&M 10, Texas 7

The Aggies won their first conference title since 1956 by beating Texas, which would have tied the Aggies and Texas Tech with a victory.

1963: No. 1 Texas 15, Texas A&M 13

En route to the national title, the Longhorns scored late to win the SWC title and avoid a co-championship with Baylor.

1955: Texas 21, No. 8 Texas A&M 6

A win would have clinched the SWC title for Bear Bryant’s second A&M squad.

1943: No. 12 Texas 27, No. 16 Texas A&M 13

Both teams entered the season finale undefeated in conference play.
