Pete Thamel announces Georgia football assistant as UNC HC contender.
One of Georgia’s greatest assistants has been identified as a North Carolina head coaching contender.
With one week remaining in the regular season, the Tar Heels fired head coach Mack Brown on Tuesday. As a result, fans and insiders are putting together a list of potential head coaches. ESPN’s Pete Thamel has mentioned a Georgia football assistant as a candidate for the position.
Thamel explained how the Tar Heels got to where they are now on ESPN’s College Football Live. He also mentioned Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann as a potential candidate for the position in the future.
“For assistant coaches, Glenn Schumann at Georgia and Al Golden at Notre Dame are two names,” according to Thamel.
Schumann has been the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator since 2022, having joined the program in 2016. He took over as the team’s defensive coordinator after Dan Lanning left to become the head coach at Oregon.
Georgia has secured yet another SEC Championship Game participation.
For more than a decade, Alabama football was widely regarded as the top team and program in the Southeastern Conference. That has changed now that Georgia football has assumed that role. Following a wild week in the SEC during Week 13 of the collegiate football season, the Bulldogs secured a spot in the 2024 SEC Championship Game.
With their victory, Georgia will have reached the main game for the fourth time in a row. It also almost ensures them a position in the College Football Playoff.
Georgia has also appeared in six of the last seven SEC Championship Games, demonstrating its dominance. They have only won two of them, however. The issue is, Georgia’s appearance in the championship game this year is unique. Now that divisions no longer exist, the SEC’s best two teams advance, rather than the best from each division. Simply said, it is much more difficult than before.
