Mikaela Shiffrin gets 98th World Cup win (8th reindeer)
Mikaela Shiffrin set new records by winning the annual slalom in Levi, Finland, for the seventh time and her 98th career Alpine skiing World Cup victory.
In Saturday’s second race of the season, 29-year-old Shiffrin defeated Austrian Katharina Liensberger by 79 hundredths of a second based on combined results from two races. After the first run, she was ahead of German Lena Dürr by a substantial six tenths.
Since late January, Shiffrin has won five straight slalom starts, which is her first winning run in the sport since 2019. Due to leg injuries sustained in a downhill incident in February, she missed one slalom.
This week, she told Swiss station SRF, “Maybe the victory is more special because I saw the northern lights.”
