JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Lynyrd Skynyrd monument in Mississippi marks where several members of the group died during a plane crash in 1977.
The group had just performed in Greenville, South Carolina, and they were on a chartered plane heading to Baton Rouge to play a concert at Louisiana State University. The plane ran out of fuel and crashed into a heavy wooded area about four or five miles northeast of Gillsburg.

Those who died in the crash included Ronnie Van Zant, Cassie Gaines, Steve Gaines, the pilot, co-pilot and eight others. Twenty people survived the crash, but they were seriously injured.
The Lynyrd Skynyrd Memorial was established in 2019 to mark the site of the crash and as a monument to one of the original Southern Rock bands. The monument is another music pilgrimage site in Mississippi.
