British metalcore band Architects have dropped a brand new single by the name of “Whiplash“, along with the music video for it. The song comes from their eleventh studio album, “The Sky, The Earth & All Between“, which Epitaph Records will be releasing on February 28th. Ex-Bring Me The Horizon keyboardist, etc. Jordan Fish once again assumed the production duties on this latest track from the record.
The band’s drummer Dan Searle commented of the below video for the song, which was filmed in Slovenia with director Specter Berlin:
“We’ve long admired director ‘Specter‘ for his work with Rammstein so it was a pleasure to bring him in for this song to create something for us. His visual concept gave life to the words in a unique way that may create more questions than answers, but sometimes that’s the beauty in art.
‘Whiplash‘ marks the beginning of a new era for Architects. It is a song that speaks of tribalism, of a deepening chasm that lies between human beings based simply on opinions and beliefs. It gave us the opportunity to explore these concepts in a way that we haven’t before and for the first time in a while it gave us fuel to write something truly ferocious.”
Vocalist Sam Carter added:
“We’re so happy to be back and to be releasing a song that we love so much, it’s us at our very best and we think it’ll be a fan favourite.”
Discussing the single further in a newly published interview with NME, Carter stated:
“We were talking about having a bouncy, Limp Bizkit-type party riff, and making a heavy song – in the world of Slipknot’s ‘Iowa’ era – that had a catchy chorus. Dan came up with the big boy riff.”
Searle further added:
“The last couple of albums have been more introspective – there’s still some of that on the material that we have coming – but it’s more about the world around us. People like to think that every single song of ours is about climate change, even when we’re writing songs about mental health. ‘Whiplash’ is about the way we treat each other, tribalism and our inability to get along when we have a difference of opinion. It’s a little bit tongue-in-cheek, because of the potty mouth lyrics…”
Carter continued:
“I think Architects at their best is me being really pissed off. That’s something we’ve really locked in, our unique thing [is that] nobody sounds quite as pissed off as I do when I’m yelling. That’s been apparent since I was a kid – I’ve always been yelling, I have a potty mouth. You have that character throughout, which helps lead to the intense nature of the song. I think we had visions of KoRn and Limp Bizkit at Woodstock ’99 when we were coming up with that breakdown.”
The band were also asked if their time on the road with Metallica influenced the decision to name this track “Whiplash“, with Searle responding: “I’m not gonna sit down with Metallica and play them tunes – fuck that!”
