The NFL has stated categorically that Butker’s opinions do not represent the league, but Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel emphasized the key lesson that all NFL players need to learn in the wake of Butker’s remarks.

According to McDaniel, “I think you do have to open the players’ eyes to their platform if they’re new to the situation,” Adam Beasley of Pro Football Network said. It is important for you to realize that your words might be misconstrued and remain a part of you for a lifetime. I truly want you to believe whatever it is you’re about to say. All you can do is attempt to enlighten people so they can see the effects of their actions. They are free to choose, so feel free to move in that direction if they so choose.

During his commencement speech at Benedictine College on May 11, Butker faced criticism for his remarks that women have been misled by “diabolical lies” about the value of a degree above being a wife and mother.

During the league meetings in Nashville this week, Commissioner Roger Goodell declined to comment further on the issue beyond what the league had stated in its initial statement, which stated that the NFL has more than 3,000 players and executives who have “a diversity of opinions and thoughts” that “make us as a society better.”
