A slow start in the Spring Transfer Portal does not mean Alabama Football will fail to meet its 2024 roster needs.

The Spring Transfer Portal has been far from a failure for Alabama Football. Although it was widely known prior to this week, the return of Kadyn Proctor is substantial enough to characterize the post-spring roster shift as a success.

Alabama football fans had expecting more activity. Fans of the Crimson Tide have been anticipating several important player signings thanks to media speculation. The fact that they have not yet occurred does not preclude the possibility of future additions.

Before any additions can be made to the roster, some pruning is required. According to an unofficial count, the Alabama Crimson Tide has 85 scholarship athletes on their 2024 roster. That figure will include Kadyn Proctor when he enrolls in school this summer. Against that amount, there is talk that Kalen DeBoer is planning to add four or five additional players.

Earlier this week, Kalen DeBoer stated. “We have a few scholarships open yet so you’re just looking for the right guys, the right fit.” If the informal count of 85 is right, does DeBoer’s comment imply that he already knows about a few current players who plan to leave?

Another option is that DeBoer and his staff have a list of three to six roster gaps that they aim to replace with new players. DeBoer has stated on numerous occasions that he requires one or two offensive linemen as well as one or two secondary players. Alabama fans believe the Crimson Tide may also need to add a placekicker.

Quiet Alabama Football Portal

So far, the Alabama Crimson Tide roster has lost only a few walk-ons through the Transfer Portal. It’s still early in the spring transfer period. According to FB Schedules, more than 40 spring games remain to be played. Many players may postpone making a transfer choice until they have received additional feedback from spring games.

What we can conclude is that there will be no rush of Alabama football players looking for change teams. DeBoer discussed the importance of transfer signings not being disruptive, saying, “I want to be particularly sensitive to the culture of our squad, and you don’t want to bring one in and lose two or three because of how that comes across and how it’s seen. But if it’s someone who can genuinely help our program, you always keep your eyes open and pay attention.”
