Fabio Carvalho has hinted that he may quit Liverpool in the summer, despite a new manager taking over at Anfield.

In May 2022, the forward agreed to join the Reds from Fulham in a compensation deal worth an initial £5 million. Despite a promising start, he eventually found his opportunities limited under Jurgen Klopp.

Only eight of his 21 appearances last season were from the start, and only four of those came in 2023. However, after signing on loan with RB Leipzig last June, his fortunes did not improve in Germany.

Liverpool annulled the temporary move in December, loaning the 21-year-old to Championship side Hull City for the remainder of the season after he started only three of his 15 outings.

Carvalho is at least impressing in the second tier, having started all nine games since joining the club and scoring three goals. Such exploits are aiding Hull’s improbable promotion push, with the Tigers presently sixth in the table and occupying the final play-off spot.

Given his recent struggles since joining Liverpool, the forward’s future at the club may be uncertain when he returns this summer. And now that Klopp has declared his departure as Reds manager at the end of the season, the scenario for Carvalho is even more hazy.

The player has refused to rule out leaving Liverpool, insisting he is currently focused on finishing the season with Hull.

“I just want to concentrate on where I am now, which is Hull, and whatever else happens will happen,” he told ESPN. “Obviously there’s going to be a few changes but I’ll just leave it to God and wherever he guides me, I’ll go.”

Hull City, on the other hand, have reiterated their intention to make a permanent move for Carvalho if they win promotion to the Premier League, despite Liverpool’s expected high transfer fee.

“I’m not going to say it’s easy because the financials are strong,” Tigers executive vice chairman Tan Kesler told iSport. “[He has] a Premier League salary, [and] Liverpool will demand a significant transfer fee for him.”

“The chairman would want to sign him; if there are no FFP, laws, or control, I am confident we will invest in signing Fabio.

“If we are promoted, we will definitely pursue him because of the money we will receive, and we will try to spend that money on players like Fabio.” Some of our fans’ expectations may be unrealistic, but we remain optimistic.

“If any of this happens we will do it because he’s someone we would love to have long term.”
