Cody Gakpo, Liverpool’s winger, is obviously a big fan of Jurgen Klopp, but he didn’t exactly dazzle last night against the Republic of Ireland for the Netherlands.

Wout Weghorst’s early goal was enough to secure the Netherlands’ place in the Euros next summer, although the forward struggled in the 1-0 triumph over Ireland.

Although Ronal Koeman’s team had a fantastic night, Gakpo had a forgettable one and was harshly chastised in the Dutch media for his lack of effect.

“Disappointing” Gakpo might get Klopp and Liverpool into trouble.

Gakpo was certainly not at his best in last night’s encounter against Ireland, as reported by Voetbal Primeur, and received a 5.5 rating from Football Oranje.

And Klopp may face some problems at Liverpool as a result of this performance, especially in the run-up to the crucial Premier League encounter against Manchester City the following weekend.

With Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah all doing admirably for their respective countries this month, Gakpo may be benched as the match at Etihad Stadium approaches next week.

Furthermore, Gakpo will most likely start against City as a substitute on Saturday, given his performance last night left Klopp with little to work with when deciding on his starting team.

It’s logical to expect Gakpo to be revved up to face the European minnows, who made headlines this weekend with their 14-0 loss to France, especially given that Gibraltar is the Netherlands’ next opponent.

In fact, if Koeman starts Gakpo on Tuesday, the winger has the potential to have a significant impact. He is surely keen to return to the scoresheet for his country.

And Gibraltar is the ideal opponent; the £43 million Liverpool winger will most likely be looking forward to this encounter as a significant opportunity to gain confidence.
