Donyell Malen, a forward for Borussia Dortmund, declared his ambition to play for Arsenal in the Premier League during an interview with the Dutch weekly Voetbal Zone.
According to BILD, the 25-year-old is connected with a summer transfer away from the Bundesliga’s top squad, which could earn up to £43 million in sales.
After failing to make the senior squad as a youth, Malen has now confessed in an interview with Voetbal Zone that he wants to play in the English Premier League and rejoin Arsenal.
“I think it is a dream to play in the Premier League, because I played in England as a youth,” he said. That feels like a nice dream. Yes, I attended Arsenal games when I was younger. My favorite team, Arsenal, is what I want.
“When I was younger, I wanted to build a name for myself there. In a football career, you will occasionally have to make a decision. Yes, at the age of seventeen or eighteen, I trained with the first team.
“I did make progress, but I believed that all I needed to do was play professional football.” While I was still playing youth football, I saw my teammates play professional football and understood that quitting was the proper move.
Backup option
Malen is currently in his third season at Dortmund, however there have been whispers that he could leave in the summer. The 25-year-old had a rocky start to the season, but in recent months he has improved. The attacker has made 30 appearances for the German powerhouse, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists.
Arsenal may be seeking for a new backup option on the right wing, where he has scored most of his goals. Reiss Nelson has only one goal in 21 games for the London club, so there hasn’t been a backup to Bukayo Saka’s remarkable 16 goals and 13 assists.
Malen could be the right choice to fill Saka’s deputy position. The former Arsenal graduate may potentially perform similarly on the left wing, where he has 81 career appearances. He can already play as a center forward, and he was most successful at PSV Eindhoven prior to heading to Germany.
Arsenal may aim to re-sign him from Dortmund due to his versatility as an attacking player, allowing him to play in three positions. The biggest question is whether the Netherlands international, who averaged 66 minutes per league game at Dortmund, will play a smaller starting position for the Gunners.
