This date in Texas history: Longhorns suffer a Red River Rivalry rout against Oklahoma

Today is Oct. 7, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, the Longhorns suffered one of their worst losses in its Red River rivalry with Oklahoma.

Quentin Griffin ran for six touchdowns, Texas suffered a 63-14 setback against the Sooners. The loss in 2000 snapped a three-game winning streak for the Longhorns in the series and started a five-game skid for UT. It was Mack Brown’s first loss to Oklahoma as the head coach at Texas and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops’ first win against the Longhorns.

Those 63 points are tied for the second-most allowed by Texas in the Red River Rivalry series. Texas lost seven rushing yards over its 17 rushing attempts that day on the state fairgrounds, and that remains the only time in school history that the Longhorns were held to negative rushing yards.

Was that the worst loss for Texas in the Red River Rivalry? Only Only two of UT’s 51 losses to Oklahoma have been decided by more points:

  • 1908: 50-0
  • 2003: 65-13

Two years ago, Texas recorded the most-lopsided of its 63 wins over Oklahoma. That was a 49-0 shellacking of the Sooners.
