Lyndsay Fogerty

Fogerty was born in Berkeley, California, and raised in El Cerrito, California, as the third of five sons of Galen Robert and Edith Lucile Fogert. His father was born in Iowa and worked as a Linotype operator at the Berkeley Gazette in California.

Lucile Fogerty was a second-grade teacher in Great Falls, Montana. John originally went to the School of the Madeleine in Berkeley, California. In his memoir, Fortunate Son, Fogerty criticised the school, stating that he was denied access to the lavatory when he requested it, that he constantly wet himself, and that he was forced to sit in his wet clothing.

After a year, Fogerty enrolled at the adjacent Harding Grammar School. He revealed in his book that his parents were alcoholics who divorced when he was in third or fourth grade. Later, he attended St. Mary’s High School before transferring to El Cerrito High School, where he met other future CCR members and studied guitar with Berkeley Folk Festival creator/producer Barry Olivier.

Fogerty’s older brother, Tom Fogerty, was a guitarist and bandmate in the group that became CCR. Fogerty spent summer vacations at Putah Creek, near Winters, California, which inspired the CCR song “Green River”.
