Early life: Jeff Shiffrin is an anesthesiologist and Eileen (née Condron) Shiffrin is a nurse. She is the younger of their two children. Skiing was a passion for both parents, and Eileen Shiffrin later coached her daughter. Mikaela Shiffrin started skiing on the Vail slopes at a young age, guided by them. She began racing at the age of eight and is regarded as a prodigy. Later on, she received training at East Burke, Vermont’s Burke Mountain Academy. Elite Alpine skiers are known to have emerged from the private school.

Shiffrin qualified for the Nor-Am Cup circuit, a racing series that takes place in both Canada and the United States, at the age of fifteen. For young skiers hoping to compete at the highest level of Alpine skiing, the World Cup circuit, the series is considered a stepping stone. Between December 2010 and January 2011, she emerged victorious in four Nor-Am Cup events. At the junior world championships in February, she went on to win a bronze medal in the slalom. Shiffrin’s quick ascent in the sport was propelled by her athleticism and almost faultless skill on the slopes. Her maiden World Cup victory came in December 2012 when she won a slalom race in Åre, Sweden. She won a World Cup race, becoming her the second-youngest American woman to do so. She went on to win the slalom World Cup for the 2012–13 campaign. She also took first place in the 2013 Alpine World Championships slalom competition. Shiffrin reached yet another early goal in Sochi, Russia during the 2014 Winter Olympics. There, at the age of eighteen, she became the history’s youngest Olympic slalom champion. Shiffrin won the slalom World Cup twice, in 2013–14 and 2014–15.

Both in 2015 and 2017, Shiffrin successfully defended her slalom title at the world championships. She took home the first of her three World Cup overall championships in 2017 as well. She won the gold medal in the giant slalom at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyongyang, South Korea. Later, she won the silver medal in the combined, coming in just behind the Swiss competitor Michelle Gisin. Shiffrin broke the record for most World Cup victories in a single season in 2018–19 by winning 17 of the 26 World Cup races she competed in. She won two gold medals in the slalom and supergiant slalom (super-G) at the 2019 world championships. In the giant slalom, she won bronze as well. She became the first Alpine skier, male or female, to win four straight world championship titles in a single discipline with her gold in the slalom.

Shiffrin’s father passed away in the family home following an accident in February 2020. After that, she took a break and didn’t compete again until the end of the year. Her performance at the 2021 World Championships was one of her best ever. There, she won four medals: two bronzes (super-G and slalom), one silver (giant slalom), and one gold (combined). Her six world championship gold medals from this combined triumph set an American record. Her 11 world championship medals over her career set an American record as well.

Professional beginning in 2022

Prior to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, many people believed that Shiffrin would take home numerous medals. Despite participating in six events, she failed to win anything. She expressed her regret after the end of the Games in February, but she also swore, “I have won in my career and I’m going to win again.” She had a great conclusion to the 2021–22 World Cup season the following month, taking first place in the downhill and second place in the super-G in the season’s last event in Courchevel, France. She won her fourth World Cup overall thanks to those outcomes.

Shiffrin equaled fellow American Lindsey Vonn’s record of 82 career World Cup victories on January 8, 2023. On January 24, just over two weeks later, Shiffrin overtook Vonn by winning the giant slalom at a World Cup competition in Kronplatz, Italy. In the following few days, Shiffrin won two more World Cup races, quickly extending her record. Shiffrin earned silver in the slalom and super-G, as well as the gold in the giant slalom at the world championships in February 2023. (World Cup races are not included in the World Cup schedule.) As a result, she became the Alpine skier in contemporary history with the most world championship medals—14. (During the yearly world championships in the 1930s, Christl Cranz of Germany won fifteen medals.)

On March 10, 2023, in Åre, Sweden, Shiffrin won the giant slalom, matching Stenmark’s record of 86 World Cup victories. A day later, at the same site, she decisively won a slalom event, breaking her tie with Stenmark. Shiffrin’s historic season included victories in the slalom and giant slalom, her fifth World Cup overall title, and the season discipline titles in both events.
