Good news: Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal may play doubles again, with Nadal expected to make an unexpected comeback.

The captain of Spain’s Davis Cup team has hinted to Rafael Nadal’s unexpected comeback. David Ferrer disclosed that he had discussed joining the squad for Finals week in Malaga withthe 22-time Grand Slam champion. After their recent success at the Olympics, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz may team up in the doubles if he decides to resume his Davis Cup career. Since he and Alcaraz were defeated in the men’s doubles quarterfinal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the 38-year-old has not participated in any matches. Nadal withdrew from the US Open, but he has stated time and time again that he will compete in the next Laver Cup, a team competition organized by Roger Federer.

But last week, Nadal declared he had “zero” fitness problems and withdrew from the Laver Cup, saying another player would be more suited to help Team Europe win. The former world number one is still undecided about retirement, but his future is not looking good. However, he might return to competition at the end of the year if Spain advanced to the November 19–24 Davis Cup Finals. Ferrer, a former world No. 3 seed, supports Rafael Nadal’s decision to skip the group stage ties, but he is excited about the Finals in Malaga. “I thought it was a good idea that he didn’t come to Valencia,” he said, speaking as a buddy rather than a captain.
