Bryan Gonzalez, a red Sox power-hitting prospect, breaks a franchise record for High-A Greenville

In the 4-3 loss to the Winston-Salem Dash at Fluor Field on Thursday night, Red Sox power-hitting prospect Bryan Gonzalez created some history in High-A Greenville.

Gonzalez passed Chris Turner for most homesteads in franchise history by hitting his 30th home run in the second inning of Thursday’s loss. Having gone deep 29 times for Greenville from 2005–2006, Turner had maintained the record for the last 18 years.

Gonzalez, meantime, connected on his team-leading 19th big fly of the 2024 campaign on Thursday and homerolled 11 times in 110 games for the Drive last season. Leading off the bottom of the second, the 22-year-old slugger deposited a 434-foot solo drive off Dash starter Jake Bockenstedt into the apartment buildings beyond the left-center field wall. He went 2-for- 4 with a pair of strikeouts to end the evening.

After Thursday’s performance, the right-handed hitting Gonzalez is currently batting. 264/.331 with 13 doubles, two triples, 19 home runs, 56 RBIs, 56 runs scored, 15 stolen bases, 29 walks, and 114 strikeouts in 89 games (353 plate appearances) for Greenville this season. That includes a. 370/.439/.534 slash line over his last 21 games (82 plate appearances) going back to August 6.

Gonzalez began his 72nd start of the season on Thursday night at first base for the Drive on the other side of the ball. There, in 526 defensive opportunities, the 6-foot-1, 220-pounder has committed 14 mistakes. In addition, he has begun ten games in right field, two in left field (where he has collected two outfield assists), and one at third base.

Originally signing with the Red Sox as an international free agency coming out of the Dominican Republic in July 2018, Gonzalez, who turns 23 in less than two weeks, signed for $500,000. Although the native of Villa Mella received mid-season Dominican Summer League All-Star accolades for his professional debut in 2019, publications including SoxProspects.com do not currently rank him among the best prospects in Boston’s farm system.

Gonzalez is projected by SoxProspects.com to leap to Double-A Portland in 2025 assuming he finishes the season in Greenville and stays with the club over the winter.
