On Wednesday, the Washington Nationals defeated the New York Yankees for the second time in a row, sealing yet another series loss for the losing team. Before the Orioles’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night, their lead over the Orioles atop the AL East was reduced to a half-game following their 5-2 loss.

Aaron Boone, manager of the Yankees, expressed his thoughts on the lost chance at the nation’s capital through YES Network.

It’s baseball. Although Jazz [Chisholm Jr.] hit a home run, they managed to keep us in the yard. Boone acknowledged, “You just have to keep creating as many opportunities as you can.” However, it’s evident that we didn’t push runs across sufficiently the past two nights, as we lost the series. That one is difficult; we will need to reorganize on the day off and prepare for a brief three-day event. But only one of those instances where we failed to complete certain rallies.

For a team hoping to win a championship, scoring four runs in the final two games of a series versus a non-contending team is not a good look. With the stretch run coming up, the Yankees, who have performed below the caliber of their opponents the whole season, have a lot of catching up to do.

What went wrong on Wednesday for New York?

Aside from Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, and Juan Soto, New York’s lineup lacks consistency, save for the addition of Chisholm. Because of this, Boone frequently plays around with it in high-stakes situations. On Wednesday, for example, he substituted Oswaldo Cabrera for the struggling DJ LeMahieu in the top of the ninth inning.

Boone responded, “Yeah, just felt like that was the right thing to do there.” “Just attempting to keep the ball slightly off the ground as well.”
