Forward Explains Hull City Transfer Decision

Despite Hull City’s interest, Brandon Thomas-Asante was candid while discussing his choice to relocate to Coventry City this summer.

The attacker signed a four-year contract with The Sky Blues after leaving West Bromwich Albion for their Midlands rivals Coventry for an unknown sum. Although he played the entire ninety minutes in the EFL Cup victory over Bristol City, he has only played 65 minutes in three Championship substitute appearances this season.

Ellis Simms, the starting striker, and Thomas-Asante have neither scored a goal in the league for Mark Robins’ team, which is presently eighth in the second division. Haji Wright, a winger, is on top of the scoring lists after scoring two goals against Oxford United.

The former Salford City player gave an interview to Sky Sports News where he explained why he chose to join Coventry over Hull City this transfer window. The 25-year-old was almost signed by the Tigers, who had previously set a physical with West Brom before the Sky Blues ruined the deal.

“It was a very dramatic day, it felt like a deadline day although it was nowhere near it but as it happens for players, you sort of assess your options,” Thomas-Asante stated (quotes via Coventry Live).

“I had the good fortune to have some degree of autonomy. There was particular interest in Hull and Coventry, where I currently reside. Hull was also a very strong and feasible choice.

“I have nothing but praise for their owner, the manager, and the entire Hull team, but personally, I had to consider my options and decide what would be the best course of action given the great aspirations of Coventry right now.

“I’m a player who wants to play in the Premier League, and after talking with the manager, he thought that with his help, I could do that.”

Since then, Tim Walter’s team has pursued additional goals, adding Mason Burstow from Chelsea and Chris Bedia from Union Berlin, who is spending the season on loan in Yorkshire. The Ivory Coast international’s transfer was announced a few days before to the rumored transfer of Oscar Estupinan to FC Juarez in Mexico.

The two new arrivals for City played the whole ninety minutes of their goalless draw against Millwall, and the Colombian was left out of the starting lineup. Since coming to the MKM Stadium, neither has scored.

Author’s Perspective

This summer, Brandon Thomas-Asante was in high demand and finally made the decision to relocate to Coventry City. In the hierarchy, he would have probably trailed Ellis Simms or Oscar Estupinan in both moves, but now that Hull City’s player has left, it’s possible that the former MK Dons forward was East Yorkshire’s first pick.

Still, Coventry was arguably a wiser choice. Along with Liam Rosenior’s departure, the Tigers lost a number of their best players from their unsuccessful play-off run the previous season. Tim Walter has done an excellent job of keeping the team cohesive and positioning them for success for the remainder of the campaign. The Sky Blues are currently in the play-offs, and although they lost players like Callum O’Hare to Sheffield United, they did a great job of replacing him with Huddersfield Town’s Jack Rudoni. Playing football in the Premier League is Thomas-Asante’s desire, and joining Mark Robins’ squad would increase the likelihood.
