Wigan Warriors, Leigh Leopards

Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards became the third and fourth Super League clubs, respectively, to score 0 in a Magic Weekend encounter after their victories at Elland Road.

The 2024 event in Leeds was the 17th edition of the annual event, which has been held every year since 2007, with the exception of 2020, when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The event has hosted 108 Super League games to date, with Toulouse Olympique and Toronto Wolfpack also kicking off the 2018 edition at St James’ Park with a Championship matchup.

And only five of those 108 have resulted in a niling, including Wigan and Leigh’s victories this weekend!

On Saturday, Wigan defeated arch rivals St Helens 20-0, with tries from Liam Marshall, Jack Farrimond, and Sam Walters.

Matt Peet’s team briefly regained to the top of the Super League table with that victory, but Hull KR surpassed them once more with their victory over Catalans Dragons.

Leigh, meanwhile, opened day two on Sunday with a 26-0 victory over Salford Red Devils, bringing Adrian Lam’s side within three competition points of the play-off spots on the standings.

Edwin Ipape, Umyla Hanley, Zak Hardaker, a Leeds United supporter, and Ricky Leutele scored tries for the Leopards at Elland Road.

Previously, just three Super League teams had defeated another at Magic, including twice at Murrayfield in 2010.

The Crusaders defeated the Bradford Bulls 19-0 in Edinburgh to kick off the fourth installment of the event.

Michael Witt scored twice for the Welsh team, which was led by Brian Noble and also featured Jarrod Sammut.

The following day, Michael Potter’s Saints defeated Hull KR 54-0 at Murrayfield, capping out the weekend.

Ade Gardner scored twice for the Red V at halftime in Scotland’s capital, while Tom Armstrong, Matty Ashurst, Paul Clough, Kyle Eastmond, Chris Flannery, Jamie Foster, James Graham, James Roby, and current manager Paul Wellens also scored.

Prior to the 2024 Magic at Elland Road, only one side had annihilated another at the tournament since then, and it was the Saints again, this time against Hull FC at St James’ Park in 2017, when Justin Holbrook orchestrated a 45-0 victory.

In the second game on day one that year, Regan Grace and Alex Walmsley each scored two tries. Morgan Knowles, Tommy Makinson, Ryan Morgan, and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook were the other Merseyside players to score tries.
