Picture of Yankees exec Omar Minaya and his wife Rachel MinayaRachel Minaya, wife of New York Yankees executive Omar Minaya, was discovered dead in their New Jersey home on Saturday, according to the New York Post. The reason of death has not been revealed, although suicide has been ruled out. Omar Minaya was not at home when Rachel died. The pair met in 1989 and became engaged just a year later.

Minaya will join the Yankees in 2023 as a senior assistant to general manager Brian Cashman. He began his baseball career as a scout with the Texas Rangers. He then returned to his native Queens to serve in the New York Mets’ front office. Minaya became the first Hispanic general manager in Major League Baseball history when he took over the Montreal Expos in 2002. His comeback to the Mets came in 2004, where he remained until 2010. Minaya served as Vice President of Baseball Operations for the San Diego Padres from 2011 to 2015. In 2018, he served as the Mets’ interim general manager while Sandy Alderson was recovering from cancer. Since then, he has served in a variety of advisory roles.

Rachel Minaya leaves behind Omar and their two adult sons, Justin and Teddy. Justin Minaya is an NBA player who represents the Portland Trail Blazers. He appeared in 34 games in 2023-24, scoring 1.8 points per game. In college, he played for Providence College, which advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2022, averaging 6.6 points per game. Justin is 25 years old.

According to a 2007 Sports Illustrated feature, Teddy was born in 1997, making him two years older than his sibling. Omar was working for the Rangers when Teddy was born, and he was with the Mets when Justin was born. According to the story, Rachel grew up in New Jersey.

As of Sunday night, neither the Yankees nor the MLB had issued any statements regarding the matter.
