Update: Allen Lazard’s chest injury gets ‘weird’ Jeff Ulbrich update

Following their thrilling 21–13 victory over the Houston Texans on Thursday night football, the New York Jets are feeling very good. But there are still injury worries in Florham Park. Speaking to media on Friday, interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich gave a concerning update on the health of wide receiver Allen Lazard.

Due to a chest ailment, Allen Lazard has been placed on injured reserve and will be out for at least four weeks, though he may be out for longer.

According to interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, Allen Lazard’s injury is “a strange one,” and his recuperation would take a “weird range of time.” Although there aren’t many specifics, the Jets interim head coach stated that Lazard’s injury affects both his sternum and his AC joint, thus the team doesn’t have a clear timeline for when he will return.

The Jets’ offense, which has relied largely on the former Green Bay Packers wide receiver this season, has suffered a serious blow with Lazard’s lengthy absence. In order to preserve offensive consistency with Lazard out, the squad could need to reevaluate their strategy at the position and look at other options.

With 412 yards on 30 catches across seven games, the 28-year-old now has the second-highest receiving yardage for the Jets this season. He is tied with Garrett Wilson for the team lead with five touchdowns.

After a difficult 2023 season in New York, Lazard has rebounded well in 2024. Despite a few missed passes, he has returned to being one of Aaron Rodgers’ preferred targets by putting up strong performances.

Prior to Aaron Rodgers’ transfer from the Packers to New York, Lazard signed a four-year, $44 million contract with the New York Jets on March 17, 2023. Lazard caught 23 passes for 311 yards and one touchdown in 14 games during the 2023 season.

Lazard spent the majority of the season without his longtime quarterback at quarterback since Rodgers was injured by a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1.

With Allen Lazard out, Mike Williams is filling in for the Jets.

The Jets’ wide receiver depth is strained beyond their top three targets due to Lazard’s absence. After the Davante Adams deal, it initially appeared likely that Mike Williams would be cut, but Lazard’s absence might change those plans.
