Alabama coach’s message to Kendrick Law after costly penalty against Tennessee
Alabama assistant coach JaMarcus Shephard got riled up on Wednesday when asked about junior Kendrick Law’s costly violation in the Crimson Tide’s loss to No. 11 Tennessee. With fewer than two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the No. 5 rated team in the country faced a third-and-7 from their own 33-yard line, trailing 21-17 to the Volunteers.
After an incomplete pass, Alabama wideout Kendrick Law committed a personal foul, converting a potential fourth-and-7 for the Crimson Tide into a fourth-and-22, resulting in a vital turnover on downs. Tennessee won the game 24-17 immediately after the penalty, handing first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer his second loss of the season, which could be disastrous for a squad with title hopes.

Shephard’s warning to Law following his game-winning penalty was frank, according to Nick Kelly of AL.com. “It’s not just about you,” explained the first-year co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. According to Shephard, the penalty “took an opportunity away from them (the Crimson Tide) to enjoy a win because it was something you (Law) were worried about yourself.”
These statements echoed DeBoer’s earlier statement that the Crimson Tide must ensure that other people’s opinions do not become their own. We must learn to walk the other way if someone approaches us. While this is an important takeaway for the first-year head coach and his challenged team moving forward, the loss to Tennessee last weekend was a blow.
