MAX CAVALERA Says He ‘Wouldn’t Dare’ Re-Record SEPULTURA’s ‘Chaos A.D.’ And ‘Roots’ With His Brother IGOR

In 2023, Max and Igor Cavalera re-recorded their first SEPULTURA releases, “Morbid Visions” and “Bestial Devastation,” with bone-chilling intensity. They released a re-recorded version of SEPULTURA’s “Schizophrenia” earlier this year, marking the conclusion of their early-days trilogy.

When questioned by Overdrive.ie’s Oran O’Beirne if any of the past SEPULTURA albums would be re-recorded, Max responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “Fans have asked us that, and there’s both sides of the issue. Some people say we should do the others, but I think it’s fine. I believe those three were the ones that most required it because they were completed in Brazil. Once [producer] Scott Burns got involved, I didn’t mind the ‘Beneath The Remains’ sound. I think it sounds fantastic. It has that Scott Burns sound that defined the death metal sound of the time. And I wouldn’t dare touch ‘Chaos A.D.’ or ‘Roots’.”

Max continued, “We know our restrictions and limitations, which is excellent. Some bands don’t, and some people don’t; they simply keep on. I believe we will play it live, though. I’d like to see a ‘Chaos A.D.’ tour featuring Max and Igor’s CAVALERA project… That is certainly an option. That is on the table.

SEPULTURA disbanded in 1996 with the departure of Max, after the remainder of the Brazilian four-piece split with the vocalist/guitarist’s wife Gloria as manager. Max’s brother, drummer Igor, remained with the band for another ten years before quitting SEPULTURA and rejoining Max in CAVALERA CONSPIRACY.

The Cavalera brothers recruited Travis Stone (PIG DESTROYER) to play lead guitar on the revised versions of “Morbid Visions,” “Bestial Devastation,” and “Schizophrenia.” More Cavalera alumni would join the group, with Igor Amadeus Cavalera (GO AHEAD AND DIE, HEALING MAGIC) returning to play bass.

CAVALERA’s version of “Schizophrenia” was recorded at the Focusrite Room in Mesa, Arizona, between April 15 and June 5, 2023. Arthur Rizk (SOULFLY, GO AHEAD AND DIE, TURNSTILE) handled the mixing and mastering. Eliran Kantor restored the original “Schizophrenia” cover artwork using hand-painted watercolours.

Although SEPULTURA has had a devoted fan base all over the world for nearly four decades, the Max-era albums “Roots” and “Chaos A.D.” were by far the band’s most commercially successful, having both been certified gold in the United States for sales of over 500,000 copies.

SEPULTURA announced in December 2023 that it would mark its 40th anniversary this year with a “farewell tour” that would take them around the world.

SEPULTURA’s current lineup is guitarist Andreas Kisser, vocalist Derrick Green, bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr., and touring drummer Greyson Nekrutman, who formally replaced long-time drummer Eloy Casagrande in February.
