Following consecutive, exciting triumphs in the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, Team Penske and Josef Newgarden signed a multiyear agreement on June 1 to retain the two-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion behind the wheel of the No. 2 Chevrolet for the foreseeable future.

“Josef Newgarden is a true winner, and we are excited that he will continue as a part of Team Penske for years to come,” Roger Penske, the team’s owner, stated. “What he performed Sunday in the Indianapolis 500 demonstrates how Josef regularly delivers for our team and our partners on the track, and he is equally outstanding off the track. We are pleased to have Josef remain with our organization, as his talent and dedication exemplify what it means to be a Team Penske driver.”

Newgarden, 33, has been with Team Penske since the 2017 season. In his seven-plus seasons with the team, Newgarden has 27 wins, 16 NTT P1 Award pole positions, and INDYCAR SERIES championships in 2017 and 2019. Newgarden has established himself as the series’ top oval racer, with 30 career victories putting him alone at 13th on the all-time series wins record.

“Driving for Roger Penske and this iconic team is a dream that I never thought I would realize,” Newgarden stated. “I’m grateful for the possibilities I’ve had with Team Penske.

“I have a lot of respect for the people in our organization, including the partners who help us. Our time together has been filled with hard work, effort, and dedication, and I am thrilled that we will continue for many years to come. I’m confident that we can accomplish much more in the future. I still believe we haven’t realized our full potential together yet.”

Newgarden, a Nashville, Tennessee native, won the Indianapolis 500 in 2023 and 2024, making him the first driver since 2002 to do it. With his 2024 Indianapolis 500 triumph, Team Penske now has 20 wins in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” This extension will allow Newgarden to make history as the first driver to win three consecutive Indianapolis 500s with the most successful team in the race’s 108-year history.

This year, Newgarden became the first driver in Team Penske history to win both the Indianapolis 500 and the Rolex 24. At Daytona that same season, he helped the team win the endurance classic for the first time since 1969.

Newgarden is seventh in the 2024 INDYCAR SERIES standings, with one victory and two top-five finishes in the No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet.

The contract extension was just one of the headlines surrounding Newgarden on Saturday in Detroit. Hitachi Astemo, a longtime partner of Team Penske, has renewed its agreement, and the Astemo livery will be featured on Newgarden’s vehicle this weekend in Detroit.
