On the afternoon of May 25, Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock delivered some sad news about his pitching elbow.
The right-hander will most likely need an internal bracing treatment to mend the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm. The surgery is generally viewed as less severe than Tommy John surgery and requires less recuperation time, but it will still ruin Whitlock’s season. In 2019, he underwent Tommy John surgery while with the Yankees.
Whitlock’s elbow injury is a shattering blow for Boston; he was originally placed on the 15-day injured list on April 17 with an oblique strain, and his arm problems developed later. Whitlock reported stiffness in his right elbow following a successful rehabilitation outing, and MRI revealed UCL injury. The 27-year-old will become the second Red Sox pitcher to have his season curtailed by an internal bracing treatment, following Lucas Giolito’s surgery on March 12.
Whitlock had a fantastic season prior to his placement on the IL. In 18 innings, he threw to a 1.96 ERA, striking out 17 and walking seven. However, all hope is not gone for the Sox, as Cooper Criswell has also performed admirably as a replacement in the rotation.

On May 25, the Red Sox traded with the New York Mets for the second time this season. Boston traded utility infielder Pablo Reyes to New York for cash.
On April 29, the Red Sox designated Reyes for assignment, giving Garrett Cooper his roster place. He cleared waivers and was optioned to Triple-A Worcester, where he batted.462/.588/.692 in five games. Reyes struggled offensively with the Sox, hitting.183/.234/.217 in 21 games.
Despite his offensive problems in 2024, Reyes will be remembered for his walk-off grand slam against the Royals on August 7, 2023. The Mets are undoubtedly interested in Reyes for his defensive flexibility, but it’s nice to know he can bat in key situations.
