REPORT: John Smoltz shockingly jumps the shark on strong Gerrit Cole take
Speaking on Foul Territory, John Smoltz wants to emphasize the mental toughness of New York Yankees standout Gerrit Cole when discussing the star’s World Series performances.
“The Dodgers put themselves in the perfect position by winning Game 1 and using all of their actual assets and leverage pitchers.
The Yankees had the opportunity to win the next three games, but their beginning pitching failed them. That, I believed, was the club’s strength. Then, during Game 5, I declared live that it was the best game I had ever watched. Gerrit Cole thought about everything, even the 37 pitches and all the mistakes.
Being impressed by Cole’s performance is one thing, but claiming it was the best game he had ever seen is almost insane. But he didn’t stop there.
“I’m telling you to go out and pitch two more innings.” That’s something I’ve done numerous times. You could tell he was fried in his mind. He probably didn’t cover first in part because of it. I simply believed that the Dodgers would win a lengthy series, therefore I felt that the momentum of that grand slam clearly benefited them more than it did the Yankees. Because of their starters, I predicted that they would win a series that lasted six or seven games. Additionally, due of how the Dodgers and Yankees would need to employ their “pen.”
Cole finished Game 5 with six strikeouts, four walks, five runs allowed (all unearned), and four hits allowed in 6.2 innings.
