EMERGERCY SHAKE: Saints’ Surprise Roster Moves Announced Just Before Bucs Kickoff!

The New Orleans Saints announced four last-second roster moves before kickoff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6, activating running back Kendre Miller but losing yet another starter to injured reserve. Here’s what you need to know about each transaction and what they might mean for Sunday’s game:

Miller is now on the 53-man roster, so look for him to make his 2024 debut on Sunday. The question is how many snaps he’ll get on offense, if any, after missing all of training camp and the first five games with a hamstring injury. Alvin Kamara remains on top of the depth chart with Jamaal Williams and maybe Jordan Mims still ahead of Miller.

S Will Harris designated to injured reserve

Harris went down with a hamstring injury last Monday against the Kansas City Chiefs, and it was significant enough that he’s going on injured reserve for at least the next four games. That’s a big hit to Dennis Allen’s defense. Harris was the only defender on the field for 100% of snaps the first four weeks.

S Johnathan Abram elevated for Week 6

Abram has been elevated for his second consecutive game, and he’ll see plenty of time with Harris sidelined. Second-year safety Jordan Howden hasn’t been able to hold down a starting role in the secondary so Abram will get a lot of opportunities. He had a huge game against the Bucs late last year, totaling 5 tackles, a forced fumble, a pass breakup, and an interception off of Baker Mayfield.

G Chris Reed elevated for Week 6

Reed signed with the Saints after Erik McCoy suffered a groin injury earlier this season, but he’s logged more snaps at left guard (1,831) and right guard (388) than at center (12). The Saints need all hands on deck with so many injuries hitting their offensive line but Reed will probably be held back as an emergency option in case Lucas Patrick can’t start at guard or center.
