THE TROOPS OF DOOM Feat. Former SEPULTURA Guitarist Release Live Video Footage From Portugal's Milagre Metaleiro 2024

The Troops Of Doom, the Brazilian death metal supergroup fronted by Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz, former guitarist of the original Sepultura lineup, has uploaded video footage of their performance at Portugal’s Milagre Metaleiro Open Air 2024, which took place over three days in August. Watch below:

The Troops Of Doom released their new studio album, A Mass To The Grotesque, in May through Alma Mater Records, the Portuguese label founded by Moonspell frontman Fernando Ribeiro.

The Troops Of Doom was founded in 2020, during the pandemic, by Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz, the original Sepultura guitarist. He recorded the albums Bestial Devastation (1985) and Morbid Visions (1986). Jairo quit the band in 1987, making room for Andreas Kisser, who remains with the band to this day. Other notable figures from the Brazilian metal scene appear on the Troops Of Doom roster, including guitarist Marcelo Vasco (Patria, Mysteriis), a globally recognised graphic artist known for his work with bands such as Slayer, Dee Snider, Kreator, Machine Head, Soulfly, and many more. The lineup is completed by vocalist and bassist Alex Kafer, a former Matanza live musician, and drummer Alexandre Oliveira, a former Tianastácia member.

The Troops Of Doom, hailed as a supergroup by specialised media, formed to recreate 1980s classic death metal, inspired by Sepultura’s early days with Jairo and other significant bands such as Slayer, Celtic Frost, Kreator, and Possessed. It functions as a time machine for those who long for the golden age of death metal. In just two years since its formation, the band has released three EPs: The Rise of Heresy (2020), The Absence of Light (2021), and Prelude to Blasphemy (2023), as well as their debut album, Antichrist Reborn, which was released in 2022 on CD, LP, and cassette by Alma Mater Records and praised by both fans and music critics.

André Moraes, a multi-talented musician best known for his work on Sepultura’s Dante XXI and the soundtrack to the film “Lisbela e o Prisioneiro,” produced A Mass To The Grotesque at Audio Porto studio in Porto Alegre/RS. Jim Morris mixed and mastered the album at the famed Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida, which has produced some of the finest death metal masterpieces of the 1980s and 1990s.

Dan Seagrave, the legendary artist who created countless classic death metal album covers, painted the cover art. Guedz explains: “The title A Mass To The Grotesque has the meaning of a sincere hymn to the ugly, the bad, and the feared. It comprises anything and everyone who does not fit into the moulds of a so-called ‘evolved’ society and prefers to live in the background. A gloomy liturgy for the rejected and their followers, who seek refuge and comfort in the lack of light and the alleged dictatorship of the divine word, whatever that may be. The grotesque is resistance, in which nothing is sacred!”
