In April 2006, a representative for Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard exclusively told PEOPLE that the couple was engaged and expecting their first child together. In addition, it would be the performers’ first union.
At the N.Y.C. premiere of her film Trust the Man (2005) later that August, the soon-to-be mother proudly flaunted her growing baby belly and stated that she intended to “take at least a few months off” following the birth of their child.
In 2006, Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal purchase a brownstone in Brooklyn.
Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard purchased their first house together, a brownstone in Brooklyn’s Park Slope area, while she was expecting her first child.
“We felt like we were at home the moment we walked into this house,” Gyllenhaal said in a February 2019 interview with Architectural Digest. “The light is beautiful, and the rooms feel airy because the ceilings are unusually high.”

On October 3, 2006, Gyllenhaal gave birth to the couple’s first child, a baby girl they called Ramona. The latest member was born in a hospital in New York City. According to Gyllenhaal’s representative, Amanda Silverman, “everyone is healthy and happy,” PEOPLE learned.
The parents have sought to keep Ramona out of the spotlight since her birth, avoiding talking about her in interviews and rarely bringing her along for public events. But in later years, Ramona has made a few special appearances alongside her mother, such as 2022’s front row seat at Paris Fashion Week.

The Hollywood couple revealed in 2011 that they were expecting a second child together in the spring over Thanksgiving weekend.
In March 2012, Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard disclosed the gender of their unborn child, indicating that they were expecting a girl. Gyllenhaal said at the time to USA Today that she had been able to conceal her bump for months but was at her breaking point.
“I find it tough to pretend you’re not pregnant, which I had to do. This time, I waited three and a half months to tell anyone,” she remarked. “I attended movie festivals. I have to squeeze into dresses, have crackers in my purse, and throw up in the bathroom.”

The Elena Ferrante novel served as the inspiration for Gyllenhaal’s Oscar-nominated picture, which Sarsgaard starred in. Gyllenhaal also wrote and produced the picture. During the movie’s New York City premiere, Gyllenhaal talked to PEOPLE about her spouse, whom she described as “incredible.”
“My spouse is simply amazing as an actor. In addition, he’s just a fantastic dude,” she remarked. “On set, he was fantastic. Really, I knew I could always count on him. He was just a bit more than I could have imagined. It truly caught me off guard.”
Sarsgaard confirmed his wife’s thoughts, adding that as a director, she made him feel noticed on set – an experience he finds unique.
Sarsgaard said, “She didn’t tell me what to do,” to PEOPLE. She was just grateful for what I had done. Many of the filmmakers I’ve worked with appreciate me, but they don’t truly know me or get me. Yes, she does. And those two things are really different from one another.”

“I met Maggie at a dinner, and I didn’t even know she was an actress,” he said. “I had no knowledge about her. Then, maybe six months later, Secretary came out, and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness. Alright. She is unlike any actress on the planet.

Working with her is great,” remarked Sarsgaard. She’s an excellent director, and I believe it comes from her general excellence as a host and her understanding of what people require. She is quite adept at recognizing when someone needs to be left alone and when they need to be directed.”
