What if A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Britain Covey all miss the Eagles-Bucs game?

John Ross is not an Eagles player. In his short career, Johnny Wilson has made one catch. Parris Campbell has two catches in an Eagles uniform, and Jahan Dotson has three.

That might be your receiving group for the Eagles this weekend.

With DeVonta Smith probably out of the Eagles’ game on Sunday in Tampa, A.J. Brown’s status questionable due to a hamstring injury that is still bothering him, and Britain Covey on Injured Reserve for at least four games due to a shoulder injury, the Eagles’ remaining wide receivers have only combined for six receptions while wearing an Eagles uniform.

Before acquiring Brown in the 2022 draft, the Eagles had not played a game without both Smith and Brown. Although Covey doesn’t exactly fit into their category, he does rank second among Eagles wide receivers with seven catches on seven targets.

Dotson played 63 snaps in the victory in New Orleans, Wilson 24 and Campbell 36 following his call-up from the practice squad. Wilson had a nine-yard first down reception, Campbell was 2-for-13, and Dotson received a three-yard pass.

Kellen Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Eagles, stated that the coaches were ecstatic with all three players for their contributions to the offense despite their unfamiliar roles.

Kellen Moore praised the players’ “excellent job of being able to play adjustment football” on Tuesday. “Those guys ran around, and it’s likely that they ran a few plays that they never really ran other than observing other players run them during practice.” Being able to jump in there, execute those plays, and play those adjustments in positions they probably didn’t think they’d line up in.

“We are very at ease and confident around those guys.” We consider ourselves quite lucky to have those folks because they can continue to grow and manage all the many adjustments through a game plan, especially (if) you give them a few more days.

Five of the Eagles’ 165 yards came from wide receivers after Smith went down early in the fourth quarter.

Saquon Barkley’s 65-yard touchdown run and Dallas Goedert’s 61-yard catch and run (which was made possible in large part by Dotson interfering with a crossing pattern to remove safety Will Harris off the play) capped off an incredible stretch. However, the Eagles are aware that if they want to win in Tampa, they will need to figure out a way to incorporate their receivers to some degree.

Nick Sirianni stated on Monday, “We’ll see as the week goes on who’s going to be available.” “Everything will be planned for. I have a great deal of confidence in that wide receiver room. Parris, Jahan, and Johnny are our available candidates.

“I believe Jahan has been playing effective football, even though he hasn’t got many catches. Sometimes all it takes is noticing it, going out there, organizing more activities for him, and taking additional actions to place the ball in his hands.

“After that, we have some diligent practice squad members.” We’ll see how everything turns out. However, I have a great deal of faith in this room. It might also appear in a variety of ways. Therefore, when you look at the skill positions, I have a lot of faith in both the running back and tight end rooms.

Smith and Brown might be the NFL’s best team. Brown’s 87.7 yards per game is the fourth-highest since he arrived in 2022 (after Tyreek Hill, Justin Jefferson, and CeeDee Lamb). Smith, along with Lamb, Jefferson, and Mike Evans, is one of just 11 wide receivers with at least 900 yards, 12 ½ yards per grab, and five touchdowns in each of the previous three seasons.

Losing even one of them is difficult. It’s unsettling to think about missing both Sunday.

Dotson did not attend any of training camp because the Eagles did not sign him until August 22. Wilson is a rookie sixth-round pick who is still learning, but he was here for camp. After being here for camp, Campbell was cut on August 27 with final cuts and signed a day later to join the Eagles practice squad. Ross played for the Eagles during the summer until being cut on August 27. Prior to being signed by the Eagles on Tuesday, he was not playing football.

Former first-round selections Dotson, Ross, and Campbell were selected in the second round. Danny Gray, a former 49ers third-round selection; Kyle Phillips, a 23-year-old wide receiver; and undrafted rookie Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint are all on the practice squad.

Perhaps Brown will be able to play on Sunday as well. After sustaining a hamstring injury during practice prior to the Falcons game, he has missed the previous two games.

Otherwise? A lot of Goedert and Barkley will be featured, along with whatever other players the Eagles can muster.

“You can do a lot of different things,” Sirianni stated. Very early in the planning stages of the game, and I doubt I would discuss our plans with you in any case. But there is no doubt that we have options. Simply because of the positive impression that their work, as athletes and teammates, has left on us.
