Aaron Jones, a former running back for the Green Bay Packers, will be playing for his current team, the Minnesota Vikings, at Lambeau Field on Sunday. In the offseason, the Packers cut Jones, even though general manager Brian Gutekunst had assured the public and media that he would return in 2024. Sadly, Jones was unwilling to accept another wage reduction from Green Bay, who did not want to keep him.

Not long after being freed, Jones joined the Vikings. Having gained 228 running yards, one rushing score, and an average of 5.4 yards per carry so far this season, he is having great success. Through Minnesota’s first three games, Jones has also contributed 97 receiving yards and a touchdown reception.
Aaron Jones Is Still Loved by Green Bay Packers Fans
Jones is not and will not be the only former Packers player to sign a contract with the Vikings. Fans of the player’s original squad usually lose it when their favorite players sign with their erstwhile rivals.

Fans of the Packers and Jones have not experienced this. Ever since Jones signed with the Vikings, a plethora of fans have expressed their support for him, refusing to entirely turn against the former fan favorite in Green Bay. Though they have supported him in every other game he has played, these fans naturally hope he does not help Minnesota defeat Green Bay.
It turns out that Jones is still loved by Packers supporters on both sides. The third-leading rusher in Packers history released a message he wrote on the Players Tribune on Wednesday morning, expressing his own love for his old team and its supporters.

Minnesota Vikings Running Back Aaron Jones Shows His Love for the Supporters of the Green Bay Packers

Readers will find Jones’ letter to be both poignant and motivational. In it, he gives thanks to the squad for having faith in him, his previous teammates for their encouragement, and the supporters for their outstanding backing.

The future Hall of Famer for the Packers also related some unique anecdotes about particular people who had a significant impact on his tenure in Green Bay. His account of how Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur supported him after his father passed away in 2021 as a result of COVID-19 problems was arguably the most moving of these:

“I went through the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced in my life during a season where winning the Super Bowl was our main objective. It weighs heavily on a person who is grieving the loss of a loved one to know that everyone is depending on you to perform at your best. The Packers helped me carry that grief as much as they could. My teammates were so kind to me, and they helped me experience that fraternity.

“I was genuinely shocked to learn that Coach LaFleur had traveled all the way to Texas for the burial. Our general manager, Brian Gutekunst, and coach of our running backs, Ben Sirmans, also went down. It would be an understatement to say that they didn’t have to do that, and I know that I could never make up for it on the football field. I’ll just say “thank you” now.

The story above details how Gutekunst, LaFleur, and running backs coach Ben Sirmans traveled to Texas for the funeral of Jones’ father.

This tale serves as a reminder that, despite the brutal nature of the NFL—which is demonstrated by the fact that Jones is no longer a member of the Packers—players, coaches, and executives are still human. The fact that Jones’ father passed away is very heartbreaking, but it also says a lot about the Packers as an organization that they turned up.
