Liberty Media’s CEO, Greg Maffei, has confirmed Lewis Hamilton’s interest in acquiring a MotoGP World Championship team. Liberty Media revealed in April that it had acquired an 86% share in Dorna Sports, which holds the commercial and image rights to the premier motorcycle racing series. This deal cements the American group’s position as the unchallenged leader in racing, having owned Formula One since 2016. The seven-time Formula One world champion’s arrival would increase MotoGP’s visibility. In July, in response to speculations that he was interested in owning the Gresini team, Hamilton stated that he had ‘always enjoyed MotoGP’ and was ‘interested in the evolution of the sport in general,’ but had not taken any choices.

‘When we announced the acquisition of MotoGP, we immediately had people phoning us and saying, ‘I want to buy a team,’ including Lewis Hamilton himself,’ Maffei stated at the Goldman Sachs Communication and Technology Conference. ‘Why? Because they seen what happened in Formula One and wish to follow us. Major suppliers called and said, ‘We want to be part.’ Unfortunately, I had to inform them that we cannot discuss it until we receive European Union approval, but we would be delighted to do so once granted. The operation, which values Dorna Sports at 4.2 billion euros, including debt, and’should’ be completed by the end of 2024, failing which it will expire, is still being reviewed by the European Commission, the competition authority.
