Pittsburgh — According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in the process of signing punter Corliss Waitman.

The announcement comes one day after Cameron Johnston sustained a season-ending knee injury in the Steelers’ Week 1 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. His leg was hit by Falcons defenders during a fourth-quarter punt attempt, and he left the game with a “serious” injury, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Waitman joins Pittsburgh after starting his NFL career with them in 2020. He would spend his whole rookie season on the practice squad until being dismissed in May 2021.

Waitman signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in July 2021, near the start of training camp. He was left off the team’s 53-man roster and then waived in August.

In November of that same year, the New England Patriots signed him to their practice squad, but the Steelers later added him to their regular roster in December.

Waitman appeared in two regular-season games to end the 2021 season, totaling seven punts for 365 yards.

Pittsburgh waived him in January 2022, but the Denver Broncos claimed him, and he was named the team’s starter after training camp. In 2022, he appeared in all 17 games for the team, punting 96 times for 4,470 yards, which led the league.

The Patriots signed him in free agency in March 2023 and released him at the final roster cuts. He returned to the team’s practice squad until he was released in October.

The Chicago Bears signed him to a reserves/futures contract in January 2024, but waived him during final cuts.
